Go up one level in this thread
To each his own! Timman wrote that when he tried to study using tips provided by Botvinnik, he found his game deteriated. When he went back to his own way of preperation, which included a fair amount of drinking and late night partying, his game went back to its previous higher level. Long walks in the countryside and staying at the board trying to figure out the best plan of your opponent is just not productive for everyone the way it was for Botvinnik! My own opinion is that as long as its chess, and you can do as much of it as possible without becoming demorolized, then it can be good for you. However, personally, my game keeps getting worse since I have returned to NY (from Seattle), Playing at the Marshall & on the ICC have only so far made me feel like a complete boob! (rating drop on the ICC from a previous high of 2268 to about 2000 currently, with a lot of my opponent acting like creeps even when they win). So what's left? Well I'm still thinking of turning off the computer, playing just some blitz at the Marshall, and finally the big project - Chess Book after Chess Book after Chess Book, read from cover to cover. If I do that, Probably I'll still stink but I'll feel better about my chess knowledge and be less dissapointed in my rating results. Anyway, I'm getting much older (42), I've been sick for a long time, and it really is all kind of pointless anyway, so my excuses are all in place:) mrslug - the inkompetent chess software addict!
