Subject: comparing book &egtb tourn

while there's still seems some sort of Rybka hype here,
even when the final version, with egtb and so on isnt out
yet (poor programmer, he will be overloaded with emails),

it might be not such a bad idea to to a little book
tournament, which i might do on the new Arena 1.99
(ie to do some beta testing for this version as well).

the idea will be to compare different Arena books,
only using two or 3 top-engines, but in every
case with different books, ie. the Schnapps book,
the corbit book, maybe the 'perfect' book,
and of course my own book (winning_with_e4).

a month ago already experimented wich such a tourn,
but found out in real games that the endgame
can make lot's of differences, eg. as Fruit 2.2
is stronger in the middle/endgame transition
than eg. Shredder 9.

so.. until 1/1/200 i'll take my time, sit down
relax and watch, and let the games be played, all
at reasonable slow settings lets say 20/5 or so.

engines available on my comp will be S9 (columbus_
egg settings) free versions of Fruit (2.1), Rybka
(beta), Zappa (1.1); guess that will be enough;
where possible i might include the option of using
the special engine_book, if availabe (i''ll see).

while we know Fruit 2.2 is stronger than S9, i will
give S9 egtb acces in this tourn, whereas Fruit 2.1
and the other programs dont have this option (yet).

this will not only give an idea about relative
importance of engines, books, but also about
using egtb or not.

and of course i will keep the games for those
of you will be interested (if you have any
suggestions how to adapt my tourn settings i
will be open to them but you have to quick,
as i'll start the tourn after 2nd xmas day,
and intend to let it play a *lot* of games)

(hope my comp won't crash thereafter then..)

best wishes for the new year anyway,

Jef
