I have also made the experience that my play becomes stronger due to playing blitz games (5/0) especially against computers. Four years ago, I played only blitz and rapid chess (15/0 or 30/0) tournaments for one year, since I had no possibility to play real tournament games. After this period I played an open and league games and my tournament ratings were constantly about 200 points higher (2250, DWZ) than before. The next two years, I had almost no time and played only about one or two real tournaments a year and almost no blitz games and my t. ratings droped to about 1950. This year a played a bit more in the internet (blitz) and against computers and my last t. rating was about 2180 again. Thus, I think my answer is: It is not bad to play a lot of blitz and speed chess games. Moreover, it can partly compensate for playing too less tournament games. I think, it is better for your skills only to play hundreds of blitz games against better opponents (computers!) than only to play about 20 tournament games a year.
