And on the practical side it requires much fewer mouse clicks to follow new posts, not to mention the far superior searching, attachments for PGN files etc. When reading a post the whole thread is displayed, but if there is a new post you are taken directly to it, not unlike clicking on individual posts. Then there is a button to take you to the next new post. Of course (if you log on) you can also use the "New" button to see a threaded display of all new posts since your last visit. I have used CCC, CSS and many other threaded forums. Just like you "in a strange way" I liked the old-fashioned threaded forums.
