You're correct about the Yahoo ratings (I saw a 65000+ player the other night
with three losses and no wins to his credit), but I won't play people with
ratings over 2800 or so. Kicking their butts will only artificially inflate *my*
rating to ridiculous levels. Besides, I'm not playing server chess for a rating
anyway -- I'm playing for the practice against fellow humans. I like to try to
get one game in the morning after the wife and kids have left and before I have
to start work for the day. Once I have to start answering the phone, I can't
play timed games on the servers due to the interruptions. I just use the ratings
at Yahoo as a guidepost to relative strengths (inflated ratings excluded, of
course).

I'm not an ICC member, nor do I care to join a pay server when there are so many
free ones. I've tried chess.net, but I have difficulty finding a game at
anything slower than blitz time controls. The chess.net experience (plus the
large number of commands involved with FICS) is why I've stayed away from FICS
in favor of the Java-based servers. This is not to say that I won't try FICS in
the future. I'm just pretty satisfied with the various servers on which I'm
currently playing.
