Although there are debates about the philosophical implicaitons of functionalism that you must be aware of. Starting with the Turing test, onto the Chinese Room Problem (Searl) and the Computational model of intelligence. Still it was but a metaphor. BTW, I am now right above you in the Playchess room where games are relayed :-).
