It must be a year since I last visited computer chess forums. Ruffian was the only amateur program that could really stand up to the professional programs, other than the usual Crafty. Now it is amazing to see the progress made by Fruit, Zappa and Rybka, which have left Ruffian in the wayside. This is going to make life difficult for the professional programmers! Also, Rybka's success at Paderborn was on a single CPU, playing against quads!! Congrats Rybka!! On a side note, Rybka's author did mention that he borrowed ideas from Crafty, Fruit etc. How do you distinguish between just borrowing ideas and tweaking a few lines of the evaluation as in some other programs? Is there anyway to dissemble the source code? I am just concerned that we could possibly have a plethora of tweaked Crafty/Fruit programs turning up at tournaments. Regards, Arshad
