I snipped all text, but some important things have been brought up about the
portability, etc. of Crafty.  It is important to remember that Crafty was not
written to be the absolutely strongest program it could be on X processor with Y
operating system.  Crafty was written primarily for portability and for
readability of code.  I think that if Bob's purpose was ONLY to make the best
playing program he could, he could remove portability, use a lot more assembly
(or any platform-specific) stuff (therefore targeting (say) Intel processors
running on 32 bit Windows machines), streamline the code while losing
readability, and whatever else he could do to increase speed/strength.
I don't know how much stronger it might be, but certainly it would gain
something.
