I've had occasion to compare Rybka with Fruit and Shredder in long endgame analysis. I won't try to post the details here. My impression is... Rybka has a bad reputation in the endgame, but that may only be correct for special cases and mating sequences, and undeserved overall. In general it calculates OK in the endgame, comparable to Fruit and Shredder. The difference is that it lacks endgame knowledge, a situation which the author has promised to remedy. Just adding tablebase access to Rybka will make some difference. I imagine he has more in mind. For example in a particular endgame position, it may calculate and find 4 moves all having the same evaluation of +1.1. It doesn't have the ability to distinguish between them, and say one is better. In the same position Fruit or Shredder are more likely to make a distinction, and pick 1 of the 4 moves as best. WP
