Xboard will work. If using windows I suggest Winboard. I've used Xboard for the tournament a few times. I've authored two programs. Last year I started a new one (the 2nd) and entered it while it was only three weeks old. It wasn't ready but it was great fun! The slower time controls allowed me to watch and improve the engine during the rounds. At every round, I ran a new version. You should definitely enter. If you know the engine is weak, there is nothing to lose. If you think it is the greatest engine in the world, there is a lot to lose. Andrew is correct. Test your interface to any internet chess server right away. Make sure Kibitzing works as that is a requirement for the tournament. Then test the ability to handle the time control of the tournament. Once all that is done, go back to improving the engine.
