Go up one level in this thread
I beleive the observation of the phenomena has to do with control of the game. If you are playing an opponent of equal search depth, it can control the direction of the match as much as you can. When you start searching deeper than the opponent you gain more abililty to control the direction of the match. Thus, allowing you to achieve the ficticiously better positions just to wind up in a hole. Essentially this is an offshot of the horizon effect. If you don't follow what I mean about control go back and look on one of my posts in this thread that sets up an analogy to swimming.
