That must be painful! Good exercise can keep the spine more flexible I think. Also inflammation of the lungs or heart valves could occur but not in a life threatening way. Quick diagnosis and treatment can help Kramnik. Here is his statement and a site with some more details on the disease, called Ankylosing Spondylitis. Arthritis in general is still something of a mystery I believe. Partly it has genetic factors.
