I switched from doing chess hacking on a SUN UltraSparc-architecture,
IBM P5, HP Itanium to a Pentium M notebook about a year ago.

This notebook trounces all of the above for speed. The other three
still sit at my desk but I hardly ever use them for anything.
The HP and IBM workstations are permanently left off.

Intel knows how to make fast chips for single-threaded chess hacking.
