If I recall correctly, there was a thread late in 2004 by Ed Schroeder that discussed some of the quirks of engine v engine matches when using Chessbase GUI. For systems using just one CPU there may be a small (?) reduction in CPU time for Rybka since UCI engines are a separate windows process running in the background as compared to Hiarcs which runs as a native engine in the foreground CB GUI. This issue should not affect my testing since I am using a dual processor so each engine has in effect its own processor. By viewing the windows task manager, I did verify this during the match. I would be surprised however, if this possible problem with native CB engines vs UCI engines on a single CPU system is really that significant. Another possible issue is how well a 32 bit CB engine like Hiarcs performs on a 64 bit OS as compared to a 32 bit OS ? Again, I would be surprised if this explains why Rybka does so well on my tests. To be honest, I have only seen some partial results without much supporting detail of what "others report". Perhaps I need to be enlightened :) . One thing they might want to check is a "bug" that I have seen in other CB GUI engine v engine matches where the UCI engine (Rybka) stops moving after book moves. I saw this happen in a match vs Junior 9 ..Rybka timed out for 4 games in a row without making any moves other than book. After the 4th loss, it mysteriously started to play again. Rybka bug ? CB GUI bug ? Barry
