You should scroll back a few years and see EVERY big new engine release and
watch this forum's response. Hiarcs 6 and 7, the Fritzes, Chess Tiger 12, 13,
14, and the Gambit Tiger, and of course the Shredders. In fact, just this year,
see the absolute frenzy for Fruit. It was Fruit this, and Fruit that, and I'm
talking about the weaker Fruit 2.1. Now Rybka is the new unofficial, but
recognized, king of the hill.
I've read Steve's comments on the marketing plan, but honestly I don't see it
that way. Rybka's strength has been its own marketing. Had it been of 'only'
Shredder's strength, the hoopla would be 10 times less. The fact is that an
engine came out of the blue (for all practical purposes) and is killing the
field. The constant and excessive posting on this is because of this, and not
because of some incredibly ingenious ploy by Vasik. There is absolutely nothing
new about offering a beta and then charging for the final release. It is the
norm. If you want to 'blame' Vasik for something, blame him for making such a
damn strong engine, and not so much for his 'aggressive marketing'. How often do
you see other top engine programmers openly posting here at CCC?
