Actually, there may be nonarbitrary aspects of both baseball and chess. By nonarbitrary, I mean these sports use symbols to hook into some primitive biological responses. So, for example, both chess and baseball involve invading the enemies territory. Primitive stuff (this is why, if i leave my chessboard at a tournment, i pee on it to mark my territory). Chess is intensily emotional and personal. Your oponent is trying to destroy you in various ways. One oponent may arrogantly attack, willing to make suboptimal moves , just to destroy you as fast as possible. Another oponent will seek to build a safe place, a fortress, where they can not be attacked (i use to do this, but the lack of dynamic possibility would kill me). Still others are pure sensation seekers, going into sharp, redicoulous positions, just for the thrill of it. Still others are con artists, trying to trick you into falling for a trap, etc etc. Man, its just too exhausting sometimes.. I suspect This is why GM's offer draws at such an early stage, and why we sometimes prefer to watch chess rather then play it. Now, can anybody explain what the heck is interesting about curling?
