It has to do with the way web browsers display text. Under normal conditions, all strings of "whitespace" characters (spaces, tabs, linefeeds) are reduced to a single space character. Then the browser wraps the text to its screen width. So when you copy PGN from the browser to the windows clipboard, there are no linefeed characters at the end of each line as shown in the browser. The way around this (for the webmaster) is to surround the entire PGN game in a <pre></pre> tag pair in the HTML file (or script output). This will force the browser to treat the text between those tags as preformatted text, and display it as written using in a fixed width font. But this runs into the same problem above - some readers will wind up with horizontal scroll bars. Not sure how you would get around this yourself unless you just put in the linebreaks yourself once you get into notepad.
