The Belgian (Flemish) Scots arrived in Scotland mostly during the reign of King
James VI, in the late 1500s or later.  Prior to that, there is evidence of
sophisticated curling activity in Scotland :

It is possible, however, that Flemish ice sports (such as "eisschiessen")
stimulated Scotland's own native curling activity.
