Hello Christos,

A 15% difference seems reasonable to me.  I don't have any 64-bit
Linux computers to play with, but on my G5 iMac (with a 64-bit
CPU), a 64-bit compile is about 10% faster.

Perhaps it would also be possible to improve the speed under Linux
by using the Intel compiler, which I don't have.  My Linux binary was
compiled with GCC 3.2.3.
