End of the story: Of course I have tried cygwin1.dll version 1005.17.0.0 (ridderkerk) and version 1005.18.0.0 All of a sudden, still with version 1005.17.0.0, it worked for my friend using Win98SE. For me, using Win98, it is still not working. But since I only tried in order to help my friend, it's fine with me. On my other (faster) computer with WinXP, as I said, it was working fine!
