Which of two things do you want?
A) eval must be atleast a pawn better than alpha
(this is what you have coded)
OR
B) eval must be no less than a pawn below alpha
(for this change your + to a - in "<= alpha +"
If the eval is a quick material only eval, then (B) makes more sense
to me. Typically one would have a quick material only eval at such a point.
