Subject: New Openings Suite for testing (long post)

Author: Albert Silver

Date: 13:36:28 01/17/06

When testing an engine I've been using either the Nunn2 set or the Noomen
Select, since a pre-established openings suite helps guarantee controlled
testing conditions. In both suites I had my quibbles on the choices, which is
completely subjective of course, and overall prefer Noomen's selection. The
reason I modified and created my own is that I wanted a greater diversity of
openings, with a good range of types of positions (open, closed, quiet, tense,
etc.) as well as possibly some 'funner' games to watch. My choice of openings
was not based on what the elite have been playing in the last 3 years, but
rather on openings that are found at any tournament from 2000 and up. This means
including openings systems such as the Colle, the hedgehog, and the Closed
Sicilian (quite common except at the 2500+ level), as well as others such as the
Bird's opening, the Benko, the Benoni, etc. I even added a Sicilian Dragon (see
the 'funner' comment above) with plenty of play for both sides, which hopefully
will be both entertaining to watch, and instructive on an engine's strengths or
weaknesses. The positions were also chosen to allow as much flexibility as
possible to allow the engines to choose their own path. Many of the positions
are taken directly from Noomen's suite, or are slightly modified versions of his
original choices.

I also made two versions of the suite, one 'full' version with 40 positions, and
thus leading to 80 games and another 'short' version, with only 25 positions.
The purpose of the shorter suite is simply for those wanting a shorter test with
50 games as opposed to 80.

Here is a list of the openings and diagrams of the starting positions, and in 2
other posts, I will put the plain PGNs. Have fun.

                                        Albert

I like this seemingly incocuous position from the Noomen. The game will depend
not only on which pawn is advanced (c4 or e4), but of course how the engine
plays it.

At first I wondered why Noomen chose this instead of the 4...Nf6 line played by
the top GMs trying to crack Kasparov's Scotch, but as I looked at it, I
understood. And this is a problem with many of the choices: there aren't many
alternative moves once down the main line, and many are refuted or just much
worse. The engines might even find the right moves, but even if they do, the
games won't be very varied.

Noomen's choice stopped at 9...Bb7, and I saw numerous games end in a repetition

choice, but not if I want to test an engine, so I fed a couple of extra moves.

Super classic. Reminded me of Bronstein's work on the 1953 Candidates.

A very standard position for those who play the King's Indian with either white
or black.

I wanted a Saemisch here but was quite unsure as to the variation. A prime
choice I had in mind was 6.e5 d5 7.Nh5 and f5, but I think this is a bit more
flexible.

Noomen's chice stopped one move earlier with 12...f4. I can understand the
desire to want to see the engine show it will play 13...g5 on its own, but the
none of the engines I tested did so. On the other hand, once committed to
13...g5 most got into the spirit of things.
