Optimistic settings spend more resources looking at alternatives (ie. potential improvements) for the side to move. Pessimistic settings spend more resources looking at alternatives (ie. potential improvements) for the opponent, or in other words making sure that the intended move does not run into trouble. It makes some sense to me to have an "adaptive" setting, ie. more optimistic in better positions. One implementation of this is already in Beta 10d, but this is definitely not the final word on this.
