Depth of 22 plies seems to be a practical limit for which to do this analysis
with Fruittype programs used, to which I also consider Glaurung, at least in
some of its design philosophy; the K.I.S.S. priciple in chess programming.

I still think there is reason to expect that the 12..Bf8 variation in the
Sicilian Scheveningen may face some revisions. To recap from my first post;
computers consider 13..Bf8-e7 often the strongest move, but this Bishop had just
moved back from this square a move earlier!
http://www.talkchess.com/forums/1/message.html?480199

Topalov played 13. Na5 in the game but the Knight went back to c6 a few moves
later. This was criticized by Adams afterwards, in my investigation I wanted to
see if opening problems could have arisen already earlier.

Mickey's comments on Coruschess:
http://www.coruschess.com/report.php?year=2006&report=2

"Topalov against Adams was a Najdorf-turned-Scheveningen Sicilian, repeating
their opening from San Luis. Veselin was less successful this time though, since
Adams developed a strong initiative. Mickey was critical of 15..Nc6?!
inconsistently retreating the recently moved Na5. He also called 20..g6?! A
‘suspicious move’(for better or worse 20..Qc4 had to have been tried). After the
game Topalov said he should have tried 21..Rb6!? Instead of 21..d5, which was
hit with the devilish 22.f5!"

The position after 13.Qd2:

Pro Deo 1.1 Vulcan {9k17pr} prefers 13..e5. I wished I could have analysed
deeper but the 19.00 ply result for 13..e5, still first choice at 19.00, simply
took too long

to share CPU time so running only at 50% of max speed.

Analysis of the position one move earlier is still going because I wanted to do
the first position to at least 22 plies.

At this point in the Scheveningen many moves have been tried in practice
although 12..Bf8 seems to be the main choice. I haven't got an extended database
but this are the statistics from the Sandro's big Shredder 9 book:

Move pref. chance No.games Result Year
12..Bf8 a 86.0% 86 50.5% 2000
12..Bd7 c 11.5% 94 41.4% 1994
12..Rd8 d 1.8% 253 39.5% 1993
12..Nd7 d 0.5% 2 75.0% 1995
12..Na5 e 0.0% 76 53.2% 1994
12..Nxd4 e 0.0% 31 41.9% 1992
12..e5 f 0.0% 2 0.0% 1990

So far I have a Glaurung analysis-result for this position, two best moves:

Glaurung 1.0 analysing at the moment 12..Rd8 (5/35) after 3280 minutes non-stop
analysis, I'm afraid completing the whole 22 ply iteration will take too long.
Third move considered at 22 plies was 12..Rb8 which took a long time but did not
get a better eval than the -0.14 for 12...e5.

So all in all, some computer conclusions: two move choices 12..e5 and 12..Rb8 at
move twelve seem similar, to the computer at least, to the same moves 13..e5 and
13..Rb8 considered after 12..Bf8 13.Qd2. After 12..Bf8 13.Qd2 the position seems
to be deteriorated for Black (compare evals)

At move thirteen the Knight manoever to a5 is not considered by Pro Deo Vulcan,
Glaurung and Gambit Fruit any more among the one, two cf. three best, only at
move twelve (Glaurung's analysis, it will be interesting to see if Gambit Fruit
or Vulcan concurs) and there so far it is first choice for Glaurung, 12..Bf8 is
not considered good by GF and Glaurung and simply placed back to e7 at move
thirteen.

12..Na5 seems to be the computer favourite so far after 50 hour analysis by
Glaurung. I could have played test games and analysis of deeper positions but
that was not the goal right now, just to see what comes out of an extended
overnight analysis and to see if the computer can come near what you might call
GMP-quality, GrandMasterPreparation-quality. Not quite yet I think, at least not
unaided within 8-24 hours, and not with one single program.

The computer maybe does not understand the ideas and same undoubtedly applies at
least doubly or tripley to me. But the programs I hope are not totally on the
wrong path here after these long calculations!
