You can't completely avoid a loss, that would require the engine to be very much stronger than the others, which is not the case. A position could arise where white or black is winning, but the win is many moves ahead. Neither engine sees the win, but the position is easy to play. So even a superior engine could not have avoided the loss, due to the horizon effect. Martin.
