A very close relative was(is) an alcoholic for over 50 years, and joined AA. She
has been sober for the last 4 years, and now helps coordinate meetings there and
whatnot. Her home has become one of the refuges during festivities where others
can go without be pressured by the need to drink. I took her everyday for the
first few months in order to provide support. It has completely changed her
life. Try it. It is a scary thing trying to imagine life without drinking, but
it is very possible. Seeing it at work, I acquired the utmost respect for its
power as a support group. Members really go far out of their way to help each
other.
The reason I put the (is) above is because AA members consider they never cease
to be alcoholics, they just become non-drinking ones.
