Most programs do it that way! The King in its GUI(Chessmaster) doesn't do it
like this and has to reach the position in order to use the information.....

It has perfect information. Win, draw or loss.....If it calculates that the
principal variation is the one that leads to a 6 piece position and tablebases
say "win" then its a win and reports the win(or in Nalimov's TB's the distance
to mate also!).....
