Subject: Biggest Winboard-engines Tourney

Author: brian robson

Date: 07:33:56 04/08/99

I am running my own tourney of all available winboard-compatible
freewares on my computer. All matches will be played on a single
computer(Pentium II 266Mh with 64 Mb Ram). It will be a round-robin
multi-games(6 games per match) tourney using swiss-perfect 97. So
far I manage to download a total of 25 winboard-compatible chess
engines from their respective web sites. These are

1.ant
2.arasan
3.bionic
4.cillian
5.comet
6.crafty
7.crazybishop
8.exchess
9.faile
10.fortress
11.gnuchess
12.litttle goliath
13.goliath gold
14.gromit
15.imnichess
16.jrcp(new program by James Robertson)
17.lchop
18.ldblanche
19.monik
20.phalanx
21.rival
22.skaki
23.ssechess
24.tristram
25.zchess

Olithink is excluded because it tends to make a lot of illegal moves
thus interrupting the games. Another program Pierre is also not included
because it is too weak and has poor time management; it makes all its moves
almost immediately irrespective of the time limit.

The folowing settings will be used:-
1. Pondering off
2. Each engine has about the same hashtable memory ie. 16Mb
3. No end game database used
4. The latest version of each engine will be used (except cillian)
5. There will be a total of 300 matches(or pairs of engines). Each match
will have 6 games. Each game will be a sudden death with 30 minutes per
side. Thus there will be a total of 1800 games.
6. Each match will be played automatically in winboard using the following
commands:
   /mg 6 /xreuse /xreuse2

Any one who wish to include their programs in my tourney please let me know.
Of course you have to email your program to me or let me download from your
web-sites. It will be a great honour to me if anybody would include their
program in my tourney. All games will be saved and the results will be posted to
this discussion group. I suppose this will be the biggest tourney ever held for
winoard engines (in terms of number of participants). I am working on my own
program but it is still a long way to go(maybe next year).

My email address is : drlwy@yahoo.com

Thanks a lot. I am doing this just for the fun of it. By the way I am not sure
how to calculate the elo for each engine after the tourney. Can somebody
enlighten me on that. It might take months for me to complete this tourney. Bye.
