Greg,

They don't require a copyright notice.  As soon as the authour creates it, it's
his, at least in the USA.  Converting them to a different format is what I just
explained.  Distributing them in their current format for profit would not be
wise without the authors permission.

This URL should clarify the issue for you.  Most countries, but not all,
recognize copyright law of other countries, being a non resident will not save
you.

It is also common courtesy to ask the authors regardless.  DHM
