Yeah, 40x is way too high.  I'd guess that 1.5x is about right, at least for a
chess program.  This assumes you're using a good JIT (I use Microsoft's).

Grok gets around 25knps in a normal middlegame on my K6/300, and I have never
been terribly concerned with raw search speed, so with some tweaking it could
probably run quite a bit faster.
