Subject: Ponder

I am quite new to computer chess, but after experiencing both Rybka and Fruit I
have taken quite a liking to it, and started fiddling around with some
tournaments etc. But, one thing I see here and there, which I haven't quite
figured out yet, is this term "Ponder". I've seen it in Fruit's parameters too.
What is it, and how does it impact the engine?
