The playchess.com update process is almost always just a GUI update. There is a difference. I can think of one exception. An update to engine Junior 9 (to v 9.0.0.3) was done via the playchess.com update process. Perhaps there are others. Two of the better UCI engines, Rybka and Shredder 9 , both distribute updates / patches with meaningful information for their customers. It would be nice if Chessbase would do the same for engine / GUI / software updates. For example, there is a well documented bug in Fritz 9 (http://hornid.com/cgi-bin/ccc/topic_show.pl?pid=437180;hl=fritz9%20bug#pid437180) Has anyone heard of a patch for this ? I have not. There is also a problem with update 10 to Chessbase 9 (filter on tournament names can cause repeated CB crashes) In discussing it online at playchess.com I found 2 other users who had the same problem. I was forced to back out the update. I emailed CB with all the info. I haven't heard anything from CB on this issue either.
