I dont see your problems. But perhaps it's because I dont have your agenda. Of course there is a way to update in the program itself if you follow the button for ChessBase in the HELP menue. You then get access to the updategui file and you then start that file. I did it myself for earlier versions. But again, these updates are only there if the particular number is still the actual top number of the program. Actually I searched right now for a new version of Fritz 8 [although the number 9 is already out now!] and I could _still_ find the so called service package for Fritz 8. Shouldnt an academic doctor find that file on his own? I agree that you must search a bit and I dont know why that package is only on the German site. You know if I had so many problems to get these updates I would enter the chess server and then I had "it". Therefore I asked this doctor what his _real_ problem is. I guess his problem is completely different than what he has described. Because _this_ is true, as a mere 'guest' [without a registered user name] you cant update your program on the server... Let's get real. In case someone had bought the named programs at the time of their appearances, he would have updated on the known channels longtime ago. However, if someone NOW gets older versions on CDrom and then expects that he could update the newest patches from the past, then he will probably face some problems. If people insist I can well call it for what it is - what the "real" problem is. But honestly I would prefer if we could now pass to more actual problems.
