Hi Steve, This was an excellent summary of the technical developments in computer chess. Thanks for posting it. But part of what I was trying to say was that the social aspect is just as important as the technical aspect. Without WBEC, the Winboard Forum, and the big and enthusiastic forum of testers and tournament managers, would Fabien still have been able to make Fruit as strong as it is? I personally think he would, but we shall never know. But a better question is: Would he have bothered? I am much less sure about this. At least in my case, I can say that the community is the factor which have kept me working on my program for such a long time. If nobody had cared about the weak little program I released three years ago, it would never have reached the level it has today. Tord
