Recently we have seen examples of chess programmers who after
only a few years work have produced programs often beating
their competitors. Other chess programmers have been more or less
active for 10-20 years.

Mark Uniackes chess program Hiarcs made its first appearance on the
SSDF Rating List in autumn 1993, with Hiarcs 1.0 running on a 486/33 MHz.
During a major part of 1997 Hiarcs 6.0 Pentium MMX 200 MHz held the first
place and in January 1999 Hiarcs 7.0 on the same hardware had the highest
rating. Since then there has usually been a gap of 50-100 points between
the top entrant and the strongest Hiarcs-version.

Now Mark Uniacke has provided us with a new and clearly stronger version
of his chess program, Hiarcs 10 Hypermodern, tested on Athlon 1200 MHz! The
rating has been increased with no less than 109 points compared to Hiarcs 9
and is currently 2845! That gives a second place, only eight points behind
Fruit 2.2.1! The opening book has been made by Eric Hallsworth and
Mark Uniacke.

Compared to the latest list Hiarcs 9.5a/9.6 on Palm Tungsten E has gained
16 points, going up to 2407. Fritz 9.0 A1200 MHz has lost 12 points.

Rybka 1.2 is expected to be released soon, and will then be our next test
object.
