Had it not been for Fischer, there is a great chance that I would never have
become a chessplayer. At the age of 14, in 1966, during the Cold War, I was
fascinated by the spectacle of a young fellow American beating an entire
nationally-funded gang of Soviet players singlehandedly. No one ever did it
before and no one will ever do it again.
Unfortunately, the hero-worship I have for Fischer as a chessplayer I have been
unable to retain for the neo-Nazi Fischer of the last dozen or more years. I
had trouble with Fischer's admiration for Nixon and Agnew and his membership in
a kooky religious cult, but there's simply no way to excuse a man with an IQ of
187 who adopts a "philosophy" suitable only for bullies and imbeciles. I don't
want Fischer to die. If for no other reason than nostalgia or sentimentality, I
still love him. But it's time for the chess world and the non-chess world to
move on and pay no attention to the ravings of a lonely lunatic. As far as I am
concerned, Fischer is already dead.
Sincerely, Nacho
