Subject: What's the extra dot for in tablebase filenames?

I read somewhere that some engines wouldn't recognize tablebase files named like
this: kpppkp.nbb.emd, and that the files should be renamed like this:
kpppkpnbb.emd

Is that true? What's the story wth that dot? Should I just leave it?
