Try adding "notsc" (without the quotes) to the kernel command line. (You'll need to do that in your /etc/lilo.conf or /boot/grub/menu.lst or /boot/grub/grub.conf, depending on which your distro uses.) Alternatively, you could go into your BIOS and turn off all power management. notsc is a better idea unless you really want to maximize performance and don't care about power usage at all.
