Hi,
no need to pay anyone. Just have a look at the right places and the right
programs.

Some rather simple to understand chess programs which are open source.
-TSCP
-Minimax
-Gerbil
-olithink

Don't look at fruit or crafty as they are just too complicated for a beginner.
The programs I listed here are all written in C and not C++ but if you
understand C++ you shouldn't have too much trouble to understand C.

Page of Bruce Moreland. Basic stuff and relatively easy to understand.
Especially the page about minimax and alphabeta might be an interesting read for
you.

Once you understand all the stuff on Bruce's site. Ed Shröder has a great site
which deals with a bit more advanced topics of chess programming.
