Hi Dann. :-)
Where is this server?
The question I have is rather general. At what point a program searches
to see if it is going to lose its king?! Is there such a thing
at all(like Will suggested)?!
In the given situation I do not think tablebases would have helped.

However, I have another example (that I remember) which would definitely go
under the tablebases jurisdiction, as you suggest.
