This is exactly the reason Jeremy Witherspoon from Canada and Jan Bos from the
Netherlands both competed in the 1000m speed skating event.

They were gold/silver respectively last olympics, and one was trying to defend,
and the other was trying to get the gold.

Both failed, but they still showed up to pass the torch to the new and up and
coming skaters.
