i am not a computer chess historian, but....based on what i've been reading here in the last few months.... You've missed a chess revolution in the last year. The major chessbase programs---hiarcs and fritz9---have dramatically increased in strength. They have increased between 60 and 100 points. perhaps more importantly, independent programers are now challengine the big chessbase engines. Fruit 2.2.1 plays beautiful, classical chess, and beats fritz 9 at long time controls (see ssdf). Rybka came from seemingly nowhere, plays like Tal (i'm told), and dominates all chess engines. The once feared shreder 9 is, well, being shredded by fritz 9, fruit 2.2.1, rybka, and hiarcs. Spike 1.1 has climbed to the top of the free engine group ranking, being perhaps only second to toga 1.1. (a fruit derivative). There has been a dramatic increase in playing strength and i don't know if there is an end in cite. Both fruit and shredder are comiong out with new versions soon, and it is anybodies guess how strong they will be. Rybka is not even out of beta version, and will soon have new endgame knowledge and will be even stronger..... The next few months will be quite exciting Oh, and much of what i said above is controversial and will undoubtably inspire some arguments from others :) best Joseph
