Subject: positive aspects of CEGT

Go up one level in this thread

Hi Uri,

thinking about this I have to admit that this is the thing that annoyed me most,
trying secretly to convince old testers to add to the new group. I founded AEGT
and asked again and again in Winboard Forum for support and due to this efforts
over years there were longstanding and reliable testers, who added their
efforts. Before leaving AEGT to try something new I tested also for a while in
AEGT and CEGT, but never asked AEGT members to come to CEGT. In fact CEGT and
AEGT members ever had friendly relations and we even planned to do something
common in the end, but AEGT could not "survive" for lack of testers.

Two or three came later because they wanted to support the new concept and there
was no problem that they tested in both groups.

Here it was other thing. Those longstanding testers were asked secretly. The
testers now in CEGT did not know about that.

Nowadays I regret to have admitted K.K. in CEGT and losing another good tester
also good with stats that way. I soon felt his ambition and that for him all
comes down to competition. I am very sure that I would never have had any
problems with Graham or Ray without this competition that build itself within
the new former CEGT group. It was not enough that I gave all stats and downloads
to Kirill. More quarrels arose with a member we always had probs with and
finally a dispute about using a W.D. book or not gave us the rest.
There were also disputes if to accept a new tester (friend from Sarah), whom
others did not want to have in the team because of his known aggressiveness in
postings. There were a lot of dishonest statements additionally that let me
doubt in the identity of one person now.

Uschi tried to propose a chat where all would tell openly what they do not like
and what we could do better. This was rejected, discussion was avoided, because
things in my opinion should just happen that way.

As the new group tries to get some "reputation" by mentioning again and again
the time control that is "so much" better I think I can also tell about positive
aspects of CEGT.

This are:

- consistency, people testing for years already with heartblood and many new
ideas

- many games more (currently almost twenty times as much), additional time
controls 40/4 and 40/120, many more included versions for the top engines like
Rybka and Hiarcs

- being able to present results more quickly because of using a repeated time
control coming to around more than one hour per game on average even on very
fast hardware and that is not too long and not demanding too much from testers
with slower hardware and what still will not give differences of more than a few
ELO, as soon as the new group will be able to give more than 1000 games

- including more amateurs and versions for them

- more flexibility, diversity of interesting tournaments including leagues,
World Trophy, City Grand Prix and many more

- trying to give not only numbers, but also comments (see under ratings) and
games for replay. Are ratings really so important? We have them also with good
rating lists thanks to the tools of Michael Koppel where you can easily see the
individual stats by clicking the engine name. But we also like to show games
with tournament time control in the replay zone, because here you can find
gorgeous games. Try to detect again the depth of the game by viewing it and not
only by numbers

This is my point of view and from my side there could be peace now or at least
just ignoring the other team without trying to tell constantly that all
including time controls and so on is "much better" in the new group.

CEGT is a harmonic team now and we want to keep this. One thing I learnt,
friendly relations without competition within a team is the most important thing
in order to proceed and survive. The new group only exists for two months still
has to demonstrate that they can have continuity for more than one year and that
they are able to handle conflicts within a team that will soon appear after the
first enthusiasm is over and the different characters will give first probs.

Best Regards
Heinz
