Subject: New PEJ-ratinglist: fine performance by The King 3.33, Fruit still no. 1

Hello Chesscomputerfriends!

As I wrote in this Forum several times I'm making a new ratinglist. I am
using fixed openingpositions in stead of the openingsbooks of each engine
(or a common book for all engines). Here are the 10 fixed openingpositions I am
using for my tests:

1. Queens Gambit: 1.d4, d5 2.c4
2. Kings Gambit: 1.e4, e5 2. f4
3. Stonewall: 1.d4, e6 2.c4, f5 3.Sc3, d5 4.Sf3, c6
4. Caro Kann: 1.e4, c6 2.d4, d5
5. English: 1.c4, c5 2.Sc3, Sc6
6. Russian: 1.e4, e5 2. Sf3, Sf6
7. King- or Grünfeldindian: 1.d4, Sf6 2.c4, g6 3.Sc3
8. Sicilian: 1.e4, c5 2.Sf3, d6 3.d4, cxd4
9. Queens indian: 1.d4, Sf6 2.c4, e6 3. Sf3, b6 4. g3, Lb7 5. Lg2, Le7
10. French: 1.e4, e6 2.d4, d5

Every engine has got to play each openingposition with both white and black
meaning that a match between 2 engines consists of 20 games. I find that the
chosen fixed openingpositions provide a fair mix of open, tactical and closed
positional openings. I would like to thank Klaus Wlotzka (running the
CSS-Ratinglist) for support and advices in the whole process. It's my aim to
create a ratinglist of 25 top-engines.

I'm running my tests on this Hardware:

Asus A8V Motherboard, Socket 939, FSB 1.000 MHz
AMD Athlon 64 4000+, 2.4 GHz, 1 MB Level 2 Cache, 90 nm San Diego Core
2 x 512 MB Corsair PC 3200XLPT RAM (CAS Latency 2-2-2-5)

And here are the specific testconditions:

Windows XP Pro
Hiarcs 10 GUI
10 fixed openingpositions, all openingbooks for the engines are OFF
Thinkingtime for each engine: 6 min. for the whole game + 6 bonussec. pr. move
Hash Tables for each engine: 64 MB PC 3200 Ram (CAS Latency 2-2-2-5)
8 MB Cache for TB's
TB's: Nalimov - 3 und 4-pieces
Pondern OFF

Lately I have been testing The King 3.33. Here are the testresults:

The King 3.33 – Fruit 2.2.1 7½-12½
The King 3.33 – Hiarcs 10 6-14
The King 3.33 – Toga II 1.1a 7-13
The King 3.33 – Fritz 9 9-11
The King 3.33 – Shredder 9 5-15
The King 3.33 – Spike 1.1 8-12
The King 3.33 – SmarThink 1.00 8½-11½
The King 3.33 – Ktulu 7.5 9-11
The King 3.33 – Gandalf 6.0 14½-5½
The King 3.33 – Naum 1.91 11-9
The King 3.33 – Loop List 600 12-8
The King 3.33 – Glaurung 1.0.1 13-7
The King 3.33 – Ruffian 2.1.0 10½-9½

Generally The King 3.33 made a fine performance. 9-11 against Fritz 9 and a
quite huge 14½-5½ victory against Gandalf 6.0 are good results. As a result of
the latest testresults the ratinglist now looks like this:

Program Elo + - Games Score Av.Op. Draws
 1 Fruit 2.2.1 : 2755 36 36 260 63.3 % 2660 31.2 %
 2 Hiarcs 10 : 2752 37 37 260 62.9 % 2660 26.5 %
 3 Toga II 1.1a : 2736 35 35 260 60.6 % 2662 33.5 %
 4 Shredder 9 : 2720 36 36 260 58.1 % 2663 29.2 %

 8 Ktulu 7.5 : 2652 37 37 260 47.7 % 2668 23.8 %
 9 The King 3.33 : 2645 35 35 260 46.5 % 2669 32.3 %
10 Naum 1.91 : 2612 34 35 260 41.5 % 2671 34.6 %
11 Gandalf 6.0 : 2611 36 36 260 41.3 % 2671 28.1 %
12 Loop List 600 : 2603 37 38 260 40.2 % 2672 23.5 %
13 Glaurung 1.0.1 : 2586 38 39 260 37.7 % 2673 20.8 %
14 Ruffian 2.1.0 : 2585 36 36 260 37.5 % 2673 31.2 %

All engines are playing with their default-settings with exception of Hiarcs 10
which is being tested with Hypermodern ON.

The King 3.33 enters the list on a decent 9th position with a rating of 2645.
Before starting the test of The King 3.33 I was expecting a performance
comparable to the one of Naum, Gandalf and Loop List but as you see I was a bit
wrong. Fruit 2.2.1 managed yet again to defend its topposition but Hiarcs 10
remains in the neck of Fruit. Shredder 9 regained rank 4 from Fritz 9 and
increased the gab to newcomer Spike 1.1 to 14 points! Still, it's worth
emphasizing the great performance of free-ware engine Spike 1.1.

As soon as Rybka 1.1 is available I will naturally test this extraordinary
engine but in the meantime I'll make another test for my ratinglist. Next engine
to be tested is Pro Deo 1.1.

Best regards
