Go up one level in this thread

The best program subject seems to have created some responses. But we all seem
to be answering an unqualified question. We are all attaching our own
definitions to the word 'best' influenced by what we have experience of or like
to play. The word 'best' is so unscientific, it tends to make all the responses
as ambiguous as the question.

Do we mean the strongest in pure strength? Do we mean the deepest thinking
program? Do we mean the program with the most features? Do we mean the program
that has been around the longest at or near the top? Do we mean the program
with the most helpful features for programs? Do we mean the program that runs
on the most operating systems? Do me mean the program that has won the most
games against top human chess players? Do we mean the program that has proved
the most reliable and problem free?

I cannot think of one program that would meet all of these criteria....can you?

For me Hiarcs 7.01 meets some of the criteria, Genius2,3,4,5,6 meets some of the
criteria, MCP8 mets some of the criteria, as does REBEL10c and NIMZO99a.

Deep Blue or Deeper Blue etc were flash in the pans that came out made a killing
then retired....reminds me a bit of Fisher, but at a lower level of course..:-))

I would like to think that sometime in the future a program comes out that meets
all of the above criteria and can honestly be nominated as the 'Best' program.

In the meantime its anyones guess, and no one is wrong with their choice, in my
humble opinion.
