If I'm interpretation is correct, I really like/respect Dr. Hyatt's license for
Crafty.

From my interpretation it's open source for viewing and changing to your liking
for personal use. However and this applys to you, you cannot take the code
modify it and use it as your own engine in tournaments.

I would stay away from BSD because it would allow people to use it as they
please.
GPL might be an option, but there's nothing in it for competition rules.

I believe it would be possible to use GPL and just add to it a disclaimer: "You
cannot use a derivative work for tournament play"
