Sorry, the King was a bit closer that I had in mind when typing the previous matter. The other winning line is of course: 1. b6, a7xb6 (recap) 2. a6 (moving a hanging piece to safety), Kxx (hunt) 3. a7 (race), Kxx (hunt) 4. a8Q If moving the hanging piece to safety is not in the QS, it would be logical to trigger on the opening of the line in front of it when the black a-Pawn steps aside, i.e. also allow any Pawn move of a Pawn for which the line to the promotion square opened on the previous ply. In my QS, (which did have the 'free move when threatened'), I needed only to check for the disappearance of the piece directly in front of the Pawn, to invoke the race mechanism. This to catch also cases like: [D] 8/p7/P7/1P6/8/8/8/8 w If the blocking Pawn was further away, you would not get a passer when it side-stepped.
