They know that they were surprised at the score after an opponent's response. E.g. I think that some position has a score of +100 centipawns for me (I just ate a pawn in a gambit opening). The opponent does not retake the pawn but chooses some other move that I did not search as deeply. Suddenly, I see that my score is -100 centipawns and dropping like a stone. If it is an opening book, I can put a 'do not play' tag on the previous move. If it is a position learning file, I can put a 'do not play' tag on the position. I should also store depth and evaluation data with the position. Maybe it was a blitz game at 1'+1" and a game at 40 moves in 2 hours would not suffer from the defect.
