I've lost my mind and am purchasing more chess computer stuff..Hope I have enough money to pay for my divorce lawyer when my wife finds out. This whole chess thing is pretty amazing, isn't it. We never seem to exhaust the game....there is so much breadth and depth and emotion in it.. When non-chess players think about us chess players, they probably think we are emotionaless reasoning machines (like mr spock). They have no idea how we experience the full range of emotions in a game---tension, anger, disgust, sadness, joy, and exhaustion (can you really blame the super gm's for taking the easy way out on occasion and accepting a draw after 20 moves?) Given the awe inspiring depth of this game.....I was just wondering. Does anybody know the history of how the game was developed. I mean, how did some person decide you need X number of pieces that move in Z ways. I wonder how the pieces and rules varied during the development of the game (e.g., was there a time when their was a ninth piece, called the cyclops?). Did the rules and piece capabilities gradually evolve, or did some kid make it all up in an afternoon? best Joseph
