I think he is right.
There is a kind of Rybkamania here in CCC.
I recently went to website of one of the top 5 female tennis players, visited
the fan club and its forum, and saw the kind of absolute devotion by some of the
posters. It was striking to see these people so fully devoted to this player,
and for many of them in a completely irrational way.
I have to say that there have been times when I've had the same feeling here,
regarding Rybka. Many of the posters are probably genuinely interested in chess
or in computer chess programming, but I suspect that some at least display the
same kind of identification than the one I've seen with the tennis player:
identifying to the program and feeling plain and satisfied when the program they
have chosen - and sometimes sponsored - wins these computer-based tournament. I
cannot help thinking this is a little sad and in some ways not the best way to
develop as a person.
I'm aware that these comments won't probably make me popular, but if it could
make some think about why they are interested into these computer matches...
And yes, the current thing to be in love with is Rybka.
Which I own and use.
And one day, there will be another Rybka (like Ruffian or Fruit were in their
times), and that's how computer chess will progress. Rybka, by the way, would
probably be more interesting for the progress of computer chess if we knew more
about its internals (and its strange way of counting moves).
